From the root מ־ר־ד ‎(m-r-d). Cognate with Aramaic מִרְדָּא ‎(mirdā), Classical Syriac ܡܪܕܐ ‎(merdā), Classical Mandaic [script needed] ‎(MYRDʾ) and Arabic تَمَرَّدَ ‎(tamarrada).
