יותר

יותר

Hebrew

Root
י־ת־ר

Adverb

יוֹתֵר (yotér)

  1. More.

Usage notes

  • In Modern Hebrew, when יותר modifies a definite adjective, the ה- (ha-, [definiteness marker]) attaches to it, rather than to the adjective itself.
  • יותר is typically used in connection with the preposition מ- (mi-, from) (with a simple noun or pronoun) or the conjunction מאשר (me'ashér, from what) (with an infinitive, prepositional phrase, or clause). These serve the same role in Hebrew that than serves in English.

Determiner

יוֹתֵר (yotér) m, f

  1. More.

Usage notes

  • Like English more, יותר may be used with a noun, or the noun may be left implied; in either case, any adjectives or verbs agree with the noun in gender and number. יותר itself has only one form, regardless of gender and number.
  • יותר is typically used in connection with the preposition מ- (mi-, from) (with a simple noun or pronoun) or the conjunction מאשר (me'ashér, from what) (with an infinitive, prepositional phrase, or clause). These serve the same role in Hebrew that than serves in English.
  • When both a noun and a מ- or מאשר clause are explicitly included, יותר itself may be dropped; in this regard it differs significantly from English than.

Derived terms
