From Middle Iranian, from Proto-Iranian *varsayāmaka- (hair-holder), compounded from *varsa- (hair), whence Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬯𐬀 (varəsa-, hair), Middle Persian wls (wars, hair), Old Armenian loanword վարս (vars), and a participle of Iranian *yām- (to hold), whence Middle Persian yʾmk' (jāmag), Persian جامه (jāma). The compound survives also in Persian باشامه (bāšāma).
