Etymology

From Middle Iranian *varzāk, which, according to Asatryan, is an agent noun from the root *warz- (to do; to work). For the suffix see -ակ (-ak). Byzantine Greek βάρζα (bárza) found in the Suda lexicon as a synonym of ψάλτρια (psáltria, female harper) is of the same origin.
