Etymology

From Middle Iranian *sōx, whence also Persian سوخ (sôx). Further origin unknown. Has been linked by some with Old Turkic [script needed] (soğun, onion), Turkish soğan (onion), perhaps all ultimately from Sanskrit सुकन्द (sukanda, onion), but this is not generally accepted.
