Etymology

From Ancient Greek σίκλος (síklos), σίγλος (síglos) borrowed from Hebrew שקל (shékel). The Greek word gave also Latin siclus and together with it spread into other languages: compare French sicle, German Sekel and Russian сикл (sikl), сикель (sikelʹ).
