Etymology 2

The original spelling is մաւր ‎(mawr). Usually connected with Proto-Balto-Slavic *mauˀras and derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *mewH- ‎(“to make wet, wash”). However, Martirosyan links մաւր ‎(mawr), մուր ‎(mur, “soot”) and Proto-Balto-Slavic *mauˀras and prefers a European substrate origin for them. An alternative etymology derives մաւր ‎(mawr) from Proto-Indo-European *móri ‎(“sea”), but this is less likely. Nevertheless, a conflation of these two etyma in Armenian is possible. For -ատ ‎(-at), found in the forms with a dental suffixal element, Martirosyan compares the pair արմն ‎(armn) : արմատ ‎(armat). See also Murat.
