ձոր

Armenian

Noun

ձոր (jor)

  1. gorge, ravine; canyon

Declension

Old Armenian

Etymology

Probably from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰoworo-, from *ǵʰowero-, from *ǵʰew- (to pour), with a semantic development ‘to pour, spill, gush’ → ‘bed of torrential stream, ravine’.

Alternatively, and less likely, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰoh₁ro- (gap, empty space), whence Ancient Greek χῶρος (khôros), Tocharian B kāre (pit, hole).

  1. valley, ravine
  2. bed of a torrent
