Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂en- (old woman, ancestor). Cognates include Latin anus, Ancient Greek ἀννίς (annís), Lithuanian anyta, Hittite [script needed] (ḫanna-, grandmother). The by-form հանի (hani) may derive from Proto-Indo-European *h₂en-iH-.

The word must have also had the meaning of “male ancestor” in Proto-Armenian: compare the Georgian borrowing ჰანი (hani, male or female ancestor).
