From Proto-Indo-European adjective *gʷow-io- or *gʷh₃ew-io-, from *gʷṓws (cow). Cognate with Sanskrit गव्य (gavya, coming from or belonging to a cow; milk), Avestan [script needed] (gaoiia-, coming from cattle, consisting of cattle), Ancient Greek ἐννεά-βοιος (enneá-boios).
