Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *kʰendʰ-, surviving also in Iranian languages. Compare Middle Persian hndytn' (xandīdan, to laugh), Persian خنده (xanda, laughter), خندیدن (xandidan, to laugh), Sogdian γnt- (xand-, to laugh), Kurdish ken (laugh), kenîn (to laugh). The word has an alternative form *խինձ (*xinj) found in խնծիղ (xncił).
