Old Armenian

Etymology

Borrowing from an Iranian word of the shape *xšāna-, ultimately from Proto-Iranian *xšaH- (to rule, be lord of). Among the cognates compare Sogdian ʾγšʾwʾn, ʾγšywny, ʾxšywn(y) (king), Manichaean Parthian ʾxšynd (prince). Related to իշխեմ (išxem).
