Probably from Proto-Indo-European *Hiǵʰ-l- by metathesis. Cognates include Sanskrit ईहते (īhate, to strive for, desire), Avestan [script needed] (iziieiti, to desire), [script needed] (aēzah-, desire), Ancient Greek ἰχαίνω (ikhaínō, to crave). Influenced by բաղձ (bałj).
