Etymology

From Middle Iranian *tāg, possibly via Aramaic תגא (tāgā), to account for թ (tʿ) instead of expected տ (t). Compare Persian تاج (tâj), Parthian -tʾg (tāg, crown) in xʾrtʾg (xārtāg, crown of thorns).
