Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan suggests derivation from Proto-Indo-European *yews-i(e)h₂- or *yews-it- with Sanskrit योषा (yóṣā-, girl, young woman), योषित् (yoṣít-, girl, young woman) as cognates.
