From Middle Iranian *darzāk, according to Asatryan an agent noun from the root *darz- (to attach, fasten; to load; to sew). For the suffix see -ակ (-ak). See Persian درزی (darzi) for more.

The form դերձիկ (derjik) corresponds to Middle Persian dlcyk' (darzīg, tailor).
