Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

The sense “strong, violent” may be etymologically distinct from the sense “hollow of the hand; fist”; the former may derive from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrH-on-, from the root *bʰerH-, and be cognate with արբուն ‎(arbun), Sanskrit भूर्णि ‎(bhūrṇi-, “zealous, wild”), भुरण ‎(bhuraṇa, “active, quick, lively”), Ancient Greek φυρμός ‎(phurmós, “confused mass”).
