From Middle Iranian *bārak, a by-form of Middle Persian bʾlyk (bārīg/k, thin, fine subtle). Compare Persian باریک (bârîk, thin, slender, minute), Pashto بارَگ (bāraġ, thin, delicate, fine).

For the sense development in բարակ ցաւ (barak cʿaw, phthisis) compare Turkish ince ağrı (tuberculosis, literally thin pain).

Ałayan derives from Middle Persian bʾlk' (bārak, *fast-moving; steed). Accepted by J̌ahukyan.

For the sense development “dog” → “fornicator” compare շուն (šun, dog; adulterer).
