Etymology

According to Ačaṙyan, a reduplication of *քաղ- (*kʿał-, to call), from Proto-Indo-European *kl̥h₁-, zero-grade of *kelh₁- (to call). Among the cognates compare especially Sanskrit उषःकल (uṣā-kal-a-, rooster, literally crying at daybreak), Ancient Greek καλέω (kaléō, to call), Old Irish cailech (rooster).
