Etymology

From Hurrian *an-an-uḫḫə or *an-an-uγə. Compare attested Hurrian [script needed] (an-an-is̄ḫə), Akkadian [script needed] (ananīḫu, possibly mint) from Hurrian *an-an-iḫḫə. These are from the same source, with the loss of initial a-: Aramaic נענע (naʿnaʿ), Classical Syriac ܢܢܥܐ (nānʿāʾ), Arabic نَعْنَاع (naʿnāʿ), Hebrew נַעְנַע (naʿnaʿ), Turkish nane, Armenian նանա (nana).
