Old Armenian

Etymology

According to Ačaṙyan, from Proto-Indo-European *pl̥-m- + -ուկ (-uk) and cognate with Ancient Greek πόλεμος (pólemos, war, battle); the primitive root աղ- (ał-) is found perhaps in the reduplicated verb աղաղմաղակեմ (ałałmałakem, to make noise).

On the other hand, according to Petersson and Pokorny, from the Proto-Indo-European onomatopoeic root *el-, *ol-, on which see ողբ (ołb).
