Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *al-al-ag-eh₂- (shouting), from onomatopoeic Proto-Indo-European *al-al- (to shout) and cognate with Ancient Greek ἀλαλαγή (alalagḗ, shouting). Alternatively, formed in Armenian as an onomatopoeic word.
