Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

Has been compared to Ancient Greek ὀσφύς (osphús, loins, lower part of the back) and together with it derived from Proto-Indo-European *h₃st-dʰ-, from *h₃ost- (bone). Alternatively, both may derive from a Mediterranean-Pontic substrate word.
