Etymology

Ačaṙyan derives from մանուկ (manuk, child) + -ա- (-a-) + Persian سر (sar, head), thus “head of children, school-master, teacher”. For the second element see *սար- (*sar-). For the whole formation Ačaṙyan compares the names Մանկաւագ (Mankawag), Մանկտաւագ (Manktawag).

On the other hand, Nalbandjan considers the name to be a wholly Iranian formation, namely a borrowing from Old Ossetic *Magnasara, from *magnasara (bare-headed), the supposed ancestor of Ossetian бӕгъӕ́мсар (bæǧǽmsar); see there for more.

Attested since the 14th century.
