ανάγκη • ‎(anánki) f ‎(plural ανάγκες)

1. (most senses) necessity

   Από ανάγκη πήγαμε μέσω Λονδίνου.‎ ― Apó anánki pígame méso Londínou. ― Out of necessity we went through London.

   Το έγκλημα το έκανε από ανάγκη, και όχι από απληστία.‎ ― To énklima to ékane apó anánki, kai óchi apó aplistía. ― He did the crime out of necessity, not greed.

2. (most senses) need, want, demand

   Δεν τον ενδιαφέρει οι ανάγκες της γυναίκας του.‎ ― Den ton endiaférei oi anánkes tis gynaíkas tou. ― He is not interested in his wife's needs.

   Υπάρχει καθόλου ανάγκη να καλέσουμε το ασθενοφόρο;‎ ― Ypárchei kathólou anánki na kalésoume to asthenofóro? ― Is there any need for us to call the ambulance?

   Οι φίλοι στην ανάγκη φαίνονται.‎ ― Oi fíloi stin anánki faínontai. ― Friends show themselves (when you're) in need.

3. (euphemistic) call of nature (need for urination or defecation)

   Έχετε τουαλέτα; Πρέπει να κάνω την ανάγκη μου.‎ ― Échete toualéta? Prépei na káno tin anánki mou. ― Do you have a toilet? I need to go.

   Με συγχωρείτε, έχω σωματική ανάγκη.‎ ― Me synchoreíte, écho somatikí anánki. ― Forgive me, nature calls.
