From Ottoman Turkish يونتمق (yontmak, to cut and chip, to pare down), causative of Ottoman Turkish یونمق (yonmak). The causative form took the place of the original verb. From Proto-Turkic *jōn- (to adze, plane), possibly from Proto-Altaic *ńi̯ūno (to adze, scrape off).[1] Related to Old Turkic [script needed] (yon-, to shave, scrape), Azeri yonmaq (to hew, shave) Kyrgyz жонуу (conuu, to whittle), Uzbek yoʻnmoq.
