1. Basic rural administrative unit in Vietnam, part of a district (huyện) and often comprised of hamlets (thôn); a commune.
2. (by extension) Any administrative unit in another country of similar size or rank.
3. (obsolete) A male who resides in a village (làng) and has slightly higher-than-average social status; a village elder.
