From earlier vlade, from Middle Dutchvlade, from Old Dutch*flatho, *flatha, from Proto-Germanic*flaþô, *flaþōn(“flat cake”). The word vlaai derives from the same Middle Dutch word, but from the eastern Brabantian and Limburgish dialects where intervocalic -d- became -j- instead of disappearing like it did in the western dialects.
