A derivative of vjet ‎(“last year”), variant of vit, contaminated with Latin vetus, veterem. Compare Lithuanian vẽtušas ‎(“old, archaic”), Old Church Slavonic vetьxь ‎(vetĭxĭ, “old, ancient”).
