A formation from vig, possibly related to Proto-Indo-European*u̯eik 'force, energy (victory, battle, etc.). Compare Latin vinco(“I win, beat”), Lithuanian veikiù(“make work”), Old High German wig(“battle, struggle”), wigant(“cripple”), Old English wǣgan(“to torment, smite”).
