From Late Latin tortura ‎(“a twisting, wreathing, of bodily pain, a griping colic; pain inflicted by judicial or ecclesiastical authority as a means of persuasion, torture”), from Latin tortus, past participle of torqueō, torquēre ‎(“twist”).
