From Old Turkic [script needed] (sirke, acid of grape), from Proto-Turkic *sirke (vinegar), possibly from Proto-Altaic *sū̀re (sour, acid, stinking).[1] Akin to Persian سرکه (serke), according to Doerfer the direction of a possible borrowing is not clear.[2]
