Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from pompoen ‎(“pumpkin”) or pompel ‎(“big, swollen”) + limoes, a variant of limoen modeled after Portuguese limões ‎(“citrus, lemons”). Another explanation is as gradual corruption of Portuguese pomo limões ‎(“citrus fruit”).^[1]
