Etymology

From Ancient Greek πιμελή ‎(pimelḗ, “fat”) for being a mineral with a greasy appearance, +‎ -ite.

Note: the name pimelite has been rejected in 2006 as a name as a result of confusion between it and nickel-dominant smectite or nickel-bearing talc.
