Usage notes

The shrub and its berry growing commonly in Finland, Vaccinium myrtillus, are called bilberry in standard English. There are also a number of regional words. Partly because the species is called blåbär in Swedish and Blaubeere in German, it is a common error to translate mustikka as blueberry. To add to the confusion blueberries, which are closely related to bilberries are also called mustikka in Finnish, and yet other species of Vaccinium family are also referred to as bilberries in English.
