Probably from Late Latin margarita, recast by folk etymology as though mere + grot. Compare also Old Saxon merigrita, merigriota ‎(“pearl”), Old High German merigrioz ‎(“onion”), and contrast Old Norse hafnýra ‎(“pearl”, literally “sea-kidney”).
