Etymology

• Possibly derived from the round shape of a pregnant abdomen, which can be said to resemble the rounded shape of a traditional boiled pudding.
• An alternative suggestion is an association with dialectal English pod ‎(“belly”), Low German puddig ‎(“swollen”), Westphalian Puddek ‎(“lump, pudding”).
