Etymology

here ‎(“army”) +‎ toga ‎(“leader”). From Proto-Germanic *harjatugô ‎(“army leader”), which contains Proto-Germanic *harjaz ‎(“army”) and a derivation of Proto-Germanic *teuhaną.^[1] Cognate to Old High German herizogo (German Herzog), Old Norse hertogi.
