From Middle French guede, from Old French g(u)esde, gaide, wai(s)de "woad, dye made from woad extract" (compare Medieval Latin guaisdium, wai(s)da "woad"), from Gothic or an unknown East Germanic language *wai(z)da "woad, pastel" from Proto-Germanic *waidą, *waidaz ‎(“woad”), from Proto-Indo-European *wAit- ‎(“woad”), conflated with East Germanic *wizdils, *wizdila "woad, weld" (source of Medieval Latin uuisdile, ouisdelem, guisdil "woad, pastel") from Proto-Indo-European *wis- ‎(“colouring matter, dye, poison”).
