1. A wave formed where two fluids meet under the influence of gravity – for example, where the ocean surface meets the atmosphere.

Usage notes

The term gravity wave is sometimes used as a synonym for gravitational wave. However, gravity wave also refers to the waves formed where two fluids meet under gravity and as a result the use of the term to describe the astrophysical phenomenon is proscribed.^[1]
