Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *garwijaną ‎(“to prepare”), from noun *garwaz. Cognate with Old Saxon garwian, gerwian, Old High German garawen ‎(“to prepare”) (German gerben), Old Norse gera ‎(“to do, to make”). English gar ‎(“to make, to cause to happen”) stems from the Old Norse verb instead of Old English. Related to ġearu ‎(“ready, prepared”), also possibly related to noun ġearwe ‎(“gear, clothing, attire, arms, armour”).
