From Middle French donc, variant of doncques, from Old French donkes (“then”). Of uncertain and disputed origin. Perhaps an apheresis of Old French adonc, from Latin ad-tunc, or a blend of Latin dum (“while”) + tum, tunc (“then”). Compare also Italian dunque.
