   Vi kan inte anta att varje nation har en monark, därför att det även finns republiker.

   We cannot assume that every nation has a monarch, as there also exists republics.

   Varför kan jag inte få en glass nu? - Därför att vi alldeles strax ska äta middag.

   Why can't I have an ice cream now? - Because we very soon shall have supper.

Usage notes

Compare:

Vi kan inte anta att varje nation har en monark, därför att det även finns republiker.

Eftersom det även finns republiker, (så) kan vi inte anta att varje nation har en monark.

Depending on the order between the hypothesis and the "proof", one has to choose the conjunction appropriately: därför att if the hypothesis comes first, eftersom... så if the other way around. However, the expression därför att can more or less always be replaced by eftersom (without the "så"!), even though it is slightly less commonly done if it would start a new sentence as in the second example above.

When they are interchangeable, därför att have a flavor of being somewhat more formal, strict, and indicating that the line of argument needed is not necessarily trivial.
