Variant of older cisel (influenced by pincel), from Vulgar Latin *cisellum, from Latin caesellum, from caesus, past participle of caedere (“to cut”). Possibly through the intermediate of Old French cisel. Compare Spanish cincel, Catalan cisell, French ciseau, Italian cesello.
