Probably from Latinavus, normally resulting in *au, with a diminutive suffix -uș added. Was once found in the Oltenia region but has disappeared from spoken language. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European*h₂éwh₂os(“grandfather”). Already present in Appendix Probi (avus non aus) . Compare Aromanian aush.
