Usage notes

This term has recently entered and left official use. It was adopted as a politically correct and gender-neutral alternative to banaltra, which contains the feminine prefix ban-. Among native Irish-speakers, however, the everyday term was, and still is, banaltra. A male nurse may be called banaltra fir (nurse of a man).
