agent_participle

agent participle

English

Noun

agent participle (plural agent participles)

  1. (grammar) A verb form in some (e.g. Finno-Ugric) languages that allows the property of something being a target of an action to be formatted as an adjective-like attribute.

Usage notes

The agent participle is often translated into English as past participle + by as in: "a picture taken by Matthew". If there was an agent participle in English the example might be formulated as "a taken-by-Matthew picture".
