Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *aikwernô, whence also Old Saxon ēkhorn, Dutch eekhoorn, Old High German eihhorno (German Eichhorn), Old Norse íkorni (Danish egern, Norwegian ekorn). The first syllable may be identical to āc ‎(“oak”). The second probably derives ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wer-.
