Possibly, from Latin *aviōlus, from Classical Latin avus (from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éwh₂os ‎(“grandfather”)) + -olus.^[1]. Compare Asturian güelu, French aïeul, Galician avó, Portuguese avô.
