Etymology

From Arabic اَلسُّوق ‎(as-sūq, “the market, the souq”), from Aramaic שוקא or ܫܘܩܐ ‎(šūqā’, “street, market”), from Akkadian [script needed] ‎(sūqu, “street”), from [script needed] ‎(sāqu, “narrow”). Cognate with Spanish zoco and Maltese suq.
